Women have been in leadership roles since the beginning of time. As mothers who shape the children who become the men of women of society. As business owners who hire and train employees. As teachers who educate next generations. And, yes, as construction workers who break new ground and participate in recruiting and training others.
As construction meets new generations and technological advances, women are taking their place in real estate, business development, and building construction. Women are positioned to walk in a variety of areas in construction. In fact, diversity of entry is one of the greatest assets of the construction industry. Construction site workers are needed, yes, but there are many other roles to be filled. Among them are:
- residential and commercial real estate developers
- residential and commercial real estate investors
- residential and commercial construction
- construction site management
- construction site laborers and apprentices
- masonry, carpentry, and plumbing
Now is an ideal time for women to become more actively involved in construction. Diversity is a trending buzzword in every business today, and gender diversity in construction may be the key to continued growth. Women in construction have the right to equal pay, equal opportunity, and equal growth. The key to the future of equality for women in construction is, in many cases, other women.
Not every construction job involves heavy lifting and manual labor. Some construction industry jobs involve boardrooms, technology, and inside innovation. When women lift other women as the climb the ladder of success – and succession – they enable both the present day and tomorrow.
As women navigate and overcome previous barriers to entry, the future of construction and the future of society benefit. Women are changing the landscape of construction in increasing numbers every day. They’re heading more single parent homes than at any time in history and are actively seeking ways to increase their household incomes. In addition, they’re coming into their own and becoming more aware of their physical and intellectual capabilities. As they are, they’re taking on new assignments, exploring new avenues, and opening new doors for others.
