When you think of successful women in real estate, two names probably come to mind – Leona Helmsley and Barbara Corcoran. Helmsley, famous for converting apartment buildings into condominiums and for building hotels made her mark on New York City real estate. Corcoran, made famous for her role on Shark Tank, successfully transitioned from renting apartments in New York City to ownership of real estate conglomerate, The Corcoran Group. Yes, these two women have cemented a name for themselves in real estate – and so can you.
- Be A Leader and A Lady
Leona Helmsley was as famous for her tyrannical behavior and she was for her real estate acumen. While forging ahead in any male-dominated industry makes it necessary to display courage, strength, and leadership, it doesn’t necessitate being untrue to your authentic self. Do not allow yourself to be dismissed, intimidated or bullied, but do not give up the core of who you are; a woman with a purpose and a passion – but still a woman.
- Be An Advocate and An Activist
The very first person you must advocate for is yourself. When you’re on the way toward success of your own, make sure you actively look for other women in real estate to take with you to the top. Real estate is fiercely competitive. Equip yourself with the skills and knowledge you need for success, and make sure men and women in your industry know it. Join organizations and networks that allow you to develop beneficial contacts, then share them with other women. There is room at the top. Make sure you reach back on the real estate ladder for other women.
A new generation of women are building real estate – especially commercial real estate – into profitable careers. We’re seeing advances in real estate that were impossible a generation ago. With talent, passion, and career support, women have – and will continue to – move from homemakers to home and community builders.
